Wahkeena’s Summer Dragon Quest
Self-guided program available during Preserve open hours (Wed-Sun, 8am-4:30pm)
Runs from June 1 through August 13
Well suited for all ages, adults too!
AHHHHH- We can’t believe it, there has been a Dragon sighting at Wahkeena Nature Preserve! This summer, visit Wahkeena for a fun-filled family hiking adventure to learn more about the Pygmy Appalachian Green, a secretive and elusive dragon species. On the trail, you will solve riddles and clues that will help you learn more about this mysterious dragon. Along the way, you’ll also learn about the Preserve’s history and ecology while enjoying breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. This self-guided trail is available anytime during the Preserve’s open hours and well suited for families, adults and children of all ages. Visit Wahkeena’s Nature Center to get started.
Strollers and wagons are discouraged. No pets.

Join a Wahkeena Naturalist for an in-depth look at some of the 32 species of fern that call Wahkeena home such as the delicate Northern Maidenhair fern and the unusual Southern Adder’s Tongue. Other topics of natural history will be discussed along the way. Meet at 1:00 p.m. at the nature center. Expect the trail to be around 1-mile over uneven terrain. The walk is approximately 90 minutes with frequent stops. Ages 12+

Craft supplies will be set up in the Wahkeena Nature Center from 10:00 a.m. through 2:00 p.m. Stop by anytime during those hours. An instructor will help you create your own masterpiece to take home with you. It usually takes about 45 minutes to complete a project. A family-friendly craft, best suited for ages 8+.

Come experience the rare opportunity to catch a glimpse of some of the Preserve’s more nocturnal critters- such as the Southern Flying Squirrel, Beaver and Pygmy Appalachian Green. The Wahkeena Nature Preserve is open late and the Nature Center will be open until 9pm. Gates will remain open throughout the evening so feel free to arrive anytime to participate. Naturalists will be available throughout the evening to point out observations and answer visitor questions. All ages welcome.

Escape the Summer heat at Wahkeena on a Naturalist-led hike through the Preserve’s cool hemlock valley. This natural history program focuses on the Preserve’s seasonal flora and fauna. You’ll have the opportunity to learn the names of some of Wahkeena’s bright summer wildflowers, their pollinator visitors and enjoy the natural air-conditioning of the Eastern Hemlock.
